Cool Vanilla Vine - Emphasis on "vine"

So when you see the word "vine", perhaps one should take care where one sits said "vine". I am learning all kinds of things this week. Rule #1, vines attach to anything and everything. Rule #2, don't whine when you sit the vine next to stuff and they attach to it! So...looks like I'm going to have to break out a sharp knife, my vanilla vine attached itself to one of the back doors...and it's not even made of wood for crying out loud! It's metal and glass! Oh well...check this one out. In three days it did this...

It has been rainy and humid but goodness...now if the thing will put out a few flowers...someday.

They do grab everything! But you must be ready for the flowers. They are short lived. Looks like a healthy plant.

    cheers,

I've seen a vanilla with flowers at a nursery in St Petersburg, and I watch this one for them. If I sit it in a corner and ignore it, it should bud out. lol

I have heard they have to be very mature to get bud. Then don't blink or it will be gone.

Nice healthy plant. Seems you have it in semi shade, am I correct? I have one, and have stopped looking at how many feet it has grown. Certainly many more than 11 or 12 but nary a bud. It is growing under a tree on a wire fence. Very healthy, but no bud!!!

I have mine growing behind the vanda's so it gets a good deal of sun, just not quite vanda levels. It also likes to be watered a great deal during the summer. The one I saw in bloom was wrapped around a 4 foot trellis that was in a large pot, in the same level sun as mine. It had been allowed to hang so far down and then wrapped back up over the trellis, and around the trellis. Basically the same way you would wrap up a hose, round and round. And it was roughly the thickness that mine is now. I am guessing you and I will see flowers either late summer or by next year this time. The lady I bought mine from said not to cut it as after a piece is cut from the vine it won't flower for awhile. If mine doesn't bloom by next year I will probably move it into bright sunlight.

Connie, when you look for the buds, don't stand in one place too long or the vine might decide to attach to you!
