Here is a picture of my open den spectabile flower. It is the only one fully open so far but is hidden by a large leave.

very nice, mine is also very top heavy it's pot is in a pot which is in another pot to keep it upright, it needs repotting but I've put it off because I've heard they can be fussy, other than that I found it to be a very accommodating plant, the blooms color becomes more intense as they age, congratulations

Thanks! I wish there were more than 5 buds!!!!

I am hoping to re-pot after this flower cycle completes and I see some new growth on the roots or canes.

I am about to try some s/h and perhaps this would be a good candidate because of the weight of the media? It would help keep it from falling over. But that might happen just by putting it into a larger regular pot. Any thoughts? Are dens ok in s/h?

And considering how huge they can get -- 4ft+ without the spike is common -- it might just remain your largest. heh

That's a nice pic you got of the flower. When you have more flowers open, start a new thread for the plant in the blooming subforum.
I'm falling in love with Dendrobiums. I have smaller species. A large plant is next on my list.

12 months later, this den spectabile has grown 3 new canes and is in spike with 3 spikes. 2 are much further along than the 3rd which is visible on the right most cane in the image. It is just below the bottom leaf on that cane. Some sunburn scars are visible from my attempt to put it outside last spring.

Looks like it will be quite a show this year! I have a Den spectabile, but mine is still a baby, less than a foot tall, but getting taller with each new cane.
