Wink Uh oh, four more orchids plus two seedlings followed me home today

So today I was out shopping for Talavera pots to go on the patio and happened to be fairly close to the local Orchid nursery. I stopped by "just to look".

I seem to be drawn to Dendrobium. Dendrobium antennatum - I saw this guy and was very intrigued by the leaves and structure of the plant. It does have spikes, but I have no idea how far they are from opening. I looked it up and it seems the flowers will be very unique. I can't wait!

My daughter went also and fell in love with a Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance' It has one flower - bright orange with dark red. Very striking.

Also, the first time we went to this nursery, she saw a black orchid. We didn't buy it but she has asked for one since. Today we found one - the last one they had. It is a monnierara millenium magic The plant is very healthy. I have no idea when it will bloom

I also picked up a NoID Dend that was on sale. It has a few spikes on it.

We received some seedlings as gifts, mine is Dtps. (Maui Galaxy 'CA03' x Dor. pulcherima 'CA' It also says Dark Pink pelonics. I did find a picture online from the Houston Orchid Society as this grower had entered one. It is beautiful, but I have to keep it alive for a couple of years to ever see it bloom. Wish me luck.

My daugher's little one is Dtps. Lai Yen Lee

I need to stop buying orchids. But it is so easy when they have such a variety for me to choose from. I just found out there is another Orchid nursery even closer to me. Yikes!

I will try to get pictures shortly. It is cloudy and raining, but should clear shortly.

As my collection has grown pretty fast, I need to work on a spreadsheet or database to keep up with them. How do you all record your plants. What information do you record and how helpful is it?

    Thanks,
    mk

Welcome to the club or should I say disease?

I have said "I have to stop buying orchids now that I have 100" that was 40 orchids ago. And I am just approaching my 1 year anniversary of buying my first non-phal orchid. That seems to have been the trigger of my 'problem'.

Thanks. I am infected. LOL, my husband works nights, so by the time he woke up, I had acquired 6 more plants. His only words were "you are obsessed". So, I thought that was a good time to ask about putting the small greenhouse in the breakfast area. He suggested a different spot than where I wanted to put it, so I just have to buy lights too. Silly man, he has no idea...

Do you log your plants in a journal or somewhere? I think I will make a simple spreadsheet with links to the photos. But may have to create a database at the rate I am going. I want to track it all so I can learn from my mistakes and successes.

I think I like them because they are challenging. I also am falling in love with the different plant structure. Good thing since they bloom so seldom.

I have not gotten that detailed.

Right now, all my orchids are 1 year in my possession or less. And since I am also obsessed, my memory of them is rather complete. When I am talking to other orchid lovers at work, I am by far the most obsessed. And when I start rattling off these names, they are like "How do you remember the names?". I just tell them I am obsessed. I do have a complete photo record of the flowers and the names (as complete as I can make them in the file name) on each image.

    My 2 biggest mistakes:
    1) Buying orchids that are not suitable for Colorado's environment (some masdies are tough here, I bought one and it is losing the battle. Another was in decline but seems happy now in the orchidarium)
    2) Re-pot catts at the wrong time. Don't do it!

And remember, our defense of the 'obsession' is:
There are worse things to be addicted to! Orchids are rather tame!

Either I don't remember or I just don't know, what is the right time to pot catts.

My style is somewhat like harvey.
Picture file and label. I have a complete picture of my babies (each variety) in my computer. And i also have a picture label (flower picture and its name [even if its NoID]), so i know what plant it is and its bloom. And then i hang it up on the orchid, to differentiate one from the other.

One thing is for sure, is i have a masterfile of picture label, so when i go orchid buying ill bring it along and check if i already have it. So i wont buy the same variety.

And i also put a small sticker on the picture label, if i dont already have it because it died on me...hehehehe

My style can be very cumbersome, because i have to take pictures every single one of it and hang it one by one to every pot. With this at least i can easily identify and see the bloom of that no spike orchid.

I dont have a spreadsheet (too cumbersome, and scientific in recording everything you do), because it will depend on my mood... hehehe

If you really are a hands on guy, through experience you can easily know what to do with certain variety of orchids.

The Orchid disease can be very Fatal, if not treated correctly. At first only a few, if left untreated, you can end up with a greenhouse or a farm. It is more like a Virus, it can be treated but not healed. It can stay dormant for awhile, but once aggravated it will resurface with a vengeance. So be Cautious...lol
