    Default Croyhopea Off the Wall

Today, my orchid society had our annual auction. I went in hoping to get a few plants, but left with only one - that was not originally on my list. LOL! Anyway, the plant I won was a monster of an orchid. It must weigh 50 lbs and is a beauty! (Now if I can keep it looking that way!) When I got the beast home and helped me get it into the greenhouse, I had to find a place to hang it. I finally climbed up and created a new place at the end of the gh. I hope it doesn't block too much light.

In the first photo you can see the whole plant hanging in its new home. In the second one, I tried to show the scale of this beastie. Those are full size pliers and that is my hand. Hehehehehehe.... you should have seen the folks at the society trying to lift it. I don't want to divide it since it is such a specimen, but if it blooms and is a dog, then I probably will. Without further flourish....

BTW, when I got it to the front porch, I had help me carry it to the gh. He looked at the thing and just shook his head and said "where are we going to put this one. There is no more room!" hehehe... I said, but it is only one more...

    Cheers,

Looks like the root mass alone is the size of a basketball! What a monster; looks really healthy. What a buy!

How many orchids do you estimate you guys have now? I counted today and was amazed to get to 90!

Sounds like poor Gin has the yearly auction cold!

Gosh, I don't know how many we have. I have actually started a catalog of them, but with work starting again I have not been able to work on it. I would guess around 1000 to 1500 maybe a few more, but in that general range.

The root mass seems larger than a basket-ball. I need to take a tape measure to it. I have no idea what is inside the wire basket it is planted within. It is so heavy, I think it might be lava rock. This one needs to stay wet to bloom well, so who knows what the original material was in the basket.

Yes, Gin, or as we call her every year around this time - Typhoid Mary, missed the auction. She will have to come and see me though soon. I have a bunch of plants for her! She has a bunch for me as well, but we will have to take hers out of my gh before we can bring in the ones she has for me. LOL!

The best part about getting this monster of a plant- I got it for a song! I am not sure what happened, either people were scared of where they were going to put it or maybe just being nice, but the bids started at 10 bucks and I actually won it when it was about to sell for 35. I yelled out 36 and the guy who was bidding against me, said I could have it. hehehe...

I could not believe it, really. I had saved up and figured I would spend around 45-50 dollars to support the society. I started putting money back from change, etc for this reason back during the summer. I never dreamed that I would buy something so large. I have really resigned myself to get only small orchids because of the space problems.

My list of orchids I wanted to get today included:

    Masd. Rosemary (2 inch pot)
Masd. Angel Heart (three inch pot - really over-potted for its size)
    Pleurothallis pachyglossa (three inch pot)
Sedirea japonica (Sadie out bid me on this one )
Restrepia antennifera (2 or three inch pot)
Rhynchostylis retusa var. gigantea ( 3 inch pot - sold for some outrageous price!)
    and
Koelensteinia graminea (lovely and in bloom - 3 inch pot)

Needless to say, I got nothing on my list, but left with the back of my Toyota full of this one plant.

    Cheers,
    BD

I wondered what Louis thought when he saw that plant! It was gorgeous! I must say its sheer size made me back down--not to mention that I couldn't actually lift it off the table. (I tried, with both hands!)

Sorry about the sedirea, if it makes you feel any better, I had a bunch of plants that I wanted too, but there were some people who were feeling pretty wealthy, apparently.

I ended up with the sediera japonic and a phal schilleriana, but I had gone really hoping for Neo. Falcata 'Amami', the Rhynochostylis retusa and a couple of catts, but the bidding got too rich for my blood quickly.

Lol. I found a photo online by Googling, but I will not know for sure until it blooms. It is really a monster of a plant. I would love to have it bloom in time for the SWROGA AOS show my society is hosting in May. That would be cool.

Huge plant! Wow...can't wait to see the pic's of it in bloom. Looks like some of the plants at one of the local nurseries. Way way overgrown and one nightmare of a potting project.
