Default Big bite out of pseudobulb-rodents indoors??!!?

When I got around to watering my orchids yesterday I could see that one of my onc. pseudobulbs looked translucent.

When I picked it up and turned it around I was shocked...the was a huge bite taken out of it!!! The psuedobulb looks 2/3 hollowed out. There were some dew drops on the wound so this had been done very recenty The orchid is as healthy as could be, but a seedling so it might be a goner.

What could have done this? My orchids have been inside for the past couple of weeks as we are getting frosts here in Ontario Canada.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Now I am fearful I have some rats/rodents, or hitchiker massive snails that ae going to eat my collection

Thanks for any input anyone can provide...

If it is a rodent, I don't expect it to stick to one p-bulb. It will branch out to new leaves, etc - all of your orchid plants. If a slug, you should see some shiny patches where it moves along. Either way, you need to put out some poison to stop this from happening.

What a horrible feeling. I hope you get the culprit. Good luck.

    Cheers,

I 'd say slug or snail - get some bait out quickly!

If it's snails....a penny in the pot will kill it fast. You'll find a gooey pile of icky stuff with two little eyeballs floating in it after the penny's copper gets it. If it's a rodent, place some moth balls in the area (if you can stand the stench yourself). Rodents and bugs cannot abide the smell and will stay away. I had that problem on the porch awhile back and the stinky moth balls did a great job. If only it got rid of scale too! argh!
    Hope this helps....

That's the truth. We put bait under the house because we heard the little *@$%^!# under there. That was last week. This week we are having to keep the windows open because of the smell of rotting field mice. YUCK. If possible, I would avoid bait when you can catch them in a live trap or a mouse trap. LOL.

I've had this same problem and when I asked someone at the nursery they said the reason why they eat just the p-bulb is that is where the plant stores water and nutreints.
