    Hi Shannara:

I agree with starting with a systemic fungicide. I don't think your problem is from scales but even with the photo, a more detailed description would help. For example, are the spots dark brown or black? Are the dark areas (spots) raised or sunken? Is the upperside as affected as the underside of the leaf?

While you are treating, please remember to isolate the plant and sterilize tools, etc to avoid contamination of other plants. Allow for good ventilation and monitor temperature as well as moisture.

    Best of luck,
    Dail

If this is a special/prized plant and if you want to avoid guess work, I would suggest to have it tested by sending samples to a lab for testing OR use one of those virus testing kits... if you feel it is not worth spending $$$ for testing, try to isolate it and see if the signs are showing up on the new growths. You can always separate the non-aesthetically-pleasing parts of the plants during your next repotting/dividing schedule.

Instead of getting rid of the leaves, since it looks like it's affecting a lot of them, you might just isolate the one plant from your collection for a bit to make sure whatever it is doesn't spread. My guess would be a fungus, but I'm no kind of expert. Let us know how things go!

    HI,
I'm now dealing with the EXACT same issue. Did you ever find out what the spots on the plant were? Did you test it for virus?

It could also be due to oil based insecticides. My cattleyas produced such symptoms when sprayed with Neem oil.
