Question Can anyone identify these blotches?

    Hi everyone,

I apologize for my absence lately. Unfortunately I have been spending so much of my time dealing with a personal medical condition that my orchids have been neglected because of it. Since I had the time and energy today I sat down with each plant and was cleaning off scale infestations and saw something on one of my plants that concerns me.

I have some pictures to show you...this orchid was tagged as an Enc. Osmantha but was identified by Lambert as an Enc. oncidiodes (thanks Lambe!). I don't know when this started but I am hoping it’s not a virus.

Thanks all for any input. I hope to get back around to taking photography pics to share again. I haven't been taking pics for a couple months now but am looking forward to sharing with you all again in the near future.

    Hey Orchid People!!
Like Shannara, I have been gone for a while taking care of some personal issues in the family. It appears as if the Enc's really had a time of it from those scales. I looks like what's left after the scales were removed, the bruising of the leaves. I would change the media first, and the after it recovers from that, I would just continue to feed it some foliage booster and then wait for the new growth to come out.

I never saw scale on this plant. These blotches just appeared with no sign of insects on the orchid. I do have issues with tea scale, but that is on some of my other plants, and the damage leaves a distinct yellowing. I did not see any blotches on the new growth emerging though.

    I appreciate the input!

Shann I think better you cut the leaves through my experience this blotches very contagious, will spread to the other leaves and the result horrible.

Hi Shan, I cannot help much with that. I usually cut any strange stain in the leaves and then spray with something.
I wait for you be completely recovered by now and if it is possible to post updates on the evolution of your orchid would be great.

Recently, besides the hard work in this end of year I sometimes have no energy to type or post pics... good luck with your orchid

Hey Shann, nice to see you back.

I don't know. Fungal problems can sometimes create dark irregular blotching,
especially on the younger leaves but your spots are pretty regular ...

And a virus can cause dark rings as well but usually there is a pattern inside the ring ....

I would treat it like a fungus but not sure this is one.

Clint Dawley on the forum is excellent at diagnosing orchid problems, may be worth shooting him an PM

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to try and tackle the issue tomorrow when I move the orchids back outside. I will contact Clint like you suggested Lambe...hopefully its only a fungus.

I will let you all know how it goes.

    Shann~
