no it doesn't, I thought that was the point of the LECA and S/H... to put water in the bottom half inch (give or take), away from the plant, so the LECA soaks it up to the plant and the plant takes it out of the LECA. The roots and base of the plant are halfway up the pot.

Another thing, side holes is important when flushing the LECA atleast once a month to inhibit salt build up in your LECA.

It literally cannot be overwatered, and flushing the pot frequently eliminates plant waste products and returns the reservoir chemistry to its "target" values, so is an advantage. At a bare minimum, try to water before the pot dies out.

    I hope this helps...

thank you, it does help. I will try to buy a plastic container tomorrow, it should be ok till then the way it is. I don't really plan to leave it in the leca.. this is just something to get the roots to grow. Once/if they do I'll move it back to bark and a clay pot.

You may want to leave the plant in LECA after its roots grow. The plant will grow roots adapted to the environment in which they grow, so if you replant in some other medium, it will have to grow new roots that are adapted to that particular type of medium.

Well, I guess I have changed my mind on the LECA. I took the orchid out to put the LECA in the new container with holes, and the orchid was molding below the surface of the substrate and another leaf came off. So now its in dry bark in a clay pot, back in the bag, after another dose of peroxide. I did put some LECA in margarine cups full of water inside the bag to help increase humidity without the plant itself being in wet substrate.

Thank you for all your help
