One dog and no kids. I also own a hosta nursery, attached to my home, just getting started with that. Trying to stay natural with them also - especially since I will be selling them - hopefully!

Thanks, Susan. I have on ocassion over 40 plus yrs. of growing orchids used Cygon 2 E. I have, however, used the alcohol, 409, water spray for scale, and it controls it quite well. If my greenhouse is misted properly, I rarely see scale. But, when I DO see it, I spray ALL orchids right away. It probably doesn't kill the scale, but does control it...especially if used once a week. Betty

Scale is such a horrible bug to have in a collection. I have spent hours trying to kill it, but ultimately, it finds a way to hide. This summer I plan to completely repot all of my remaining cattleyas and hopefully get any hidden scale. A huge task, but I can see by how many orchids I have had to throw out this year that if I don't kill the scale, I will lose all of my old cattleyas.

    Cheers,
    BD

If you do not already do it, I would peel back the paper thin sheathes over the pseudobulbds also. Last night I found an infestation under a pseudobulb of an Onc.
At the greenhouse where I volunteer, we are bombing each of the houses with Attain 2. It is really great stuff if you have a greenhouse. Within 2 days all of the mealy bugs were blobs of white goo. The scale turned light and fell off. The key is to repeat i 7 - 10 days for the new larvae, before they become adults and reproduce.

I can buy Cygon 2 but good grief, the warnings on the label are enough to scare a person off.............

I had to use it in Minnesota once when I had a bigger greenhouse. The Orchid Society up there was great...taught everyone how to take care of their orchids in case of an infestation of anything. True, I did assemble everything first, and was dressed properly. Actually, I'd probably opt to use nicotine smoke now. Much, much easier. Betty

A friend of mine is a member of the Minnesota club now. It is incredible. She loves it. She is also an AOS student judge so she gets plenty of exposure to the plants on the judging bench. Their monthly meetings have a bring and brag time where members will bring over a hundred plants each month that are blooming........they are a big and active club.

Yes, it was and I'm sure still is a wonderful Orchid Society. Lots of helpful people. Found my FAVORITE orchid there in Minn. encyclia ceratistes. It's in spike right now with over 140 buds! I am sooooooooooo excited! Betty :-)
