Default scale residue vs. water stains

I am having a hard time determining on some of my orchids whether they have water stains on the leaves or residue from scale....don't the males leave a white residue on the leaves? I think I read that somewhere.

Anyway, the really bad one is a mini cymbidium...I think I am going to leave it outside and if it doesn't make it fine....it has white spots on the undersides of all of the leaves. That must be an infestation, right?

Hi , Scale will hang on even if they are dead . If it is on the underside of the leaves then it probably is from them , try taking a cotton ball with Safers or something soapy and run it over the area , if most of the residue comes off then it is from scale. Hope you can get rid of them , just keep after it . Gin

Ditto to what Gin said: that's it exactly.
