    Default I'm seeing spots...

...everywhere! what do you call someone who is a hypochondriac about their orchids?

Seriously, for years I had just a couple of orchids, and spots on their leaves did not concern me. I mean, spots happen. But, now that I have been reading up, I am finding I worry more. I found out my blc spots were just physical damage, and I know my oncidiums with tiny black spots are pretty typical (although I doublechecked them versus pictures to be sure).

However, those spots on my still newish howeara seem odd to me, and they weren't there when I got it. They show up on the underside of the leaf first, as an almost translucent spot, and later seem like a whitish spot from the top. Are these spots I should worry about, or should I enroll myself in a self-help course for this hypochondria-by-proxy?

Hard to tell from the photo what is going on, but it might be do to heat damage from water drops on the leaves. If it is not spreading, don't worry.

I was afraid it might be some sort of fungus.

Heat spots, huh? Well, it is over a hundred here, so that makes sense. I'll just keep an eye that it doesn't spread. Thanks so much!

Sometimes water drops will act like a magnifying glass to the sunlight and will cause little burns on the leaves of the orchids. If possible, water early in the morning so that the leaves dry off before the sunlight gets too hot. I hope that is all it is. It will not hurt to treat with a fungicide anyway. (You should do this regularly as a precaution regardless.)

    Cheers,
    BD

Yes, I sprayed it with that 3-in-one spray as soon as I got it. I do usually water 1st thing, but may have gotten water on it sometime during the day (although it has been in light shade). Odd though that the spots seem to show up on the underside first...I'd think little water-droplet sunburns would be on the top surface.

Overall though, this is only on 2 leaves, so I will keep an eye open and hope I don't see any more!

    Thanks.

Have you given the leaves the white tissue test? Wipe the underside of the leaves with a white paper towel or tissue. If it stains pink, you may have spider mites sucking juice from the leaves. another application of three-in-one would be called for then.

No, I hadn't heard of that test. Thanks, I will try that!
