Sounds like you did your best to take no prisoners!!!! Worth the effort, I am sure. I am starting to have some bug problems myself. I grow inside so it is hard to do the malathion scrub down. But, I am going to take them all outside and spray the poop out of them.

You can use Malathion for most orchids, but it is a known phytotoxin to certain Phalaenopsis hybrids. I use Confidor from Bayer, it is a nicotine analogue that works as a great systemic insecticide against all sucking and nibbling pests.

Update: so it is now about 2 weeks from my assault on the mealy bugs & scale.
I think I got them all, or at least anything that is active. I'll keep an eye on things. Right now it is starting to get chilly here and I'm cutting back a bit on the watering...don't want to do a followup spray down until I get a nice warm sunny day. Best to you & yours!

wow there must be some malicious species of the damned bug over there!
oh the joys of isolation from the rest of the world...........we have a few from my experience, and all are easy enough to just scrape of with a thumbnail and forget about. too cold i spose, or maybe they just dont like NZ water and soil
thanks remo this thread will come in handy if some get past customs though, which im sure will happen at some point.

Remo, I use a three week process for scale ( haven't had any in yrs. & yrs. though ) First I spray everything with Malathion. The next week, I spray with Cygon 2E ( this is made just for orchids ) the third week, I spray with a mix made from powdered Orthene. No more bugs of ANY KIND! I learned this from the Orchid Society of Minnesota. They had some very knowledgeable folks in that orchid club! By the way...it won't work just spraying ONCE. You need to get the young scale...that means spraying two more times with different chemicals... Betty :-)
