I put tabasco and water in a spray bottle. the habenero tabasco works gREAT. Use liquid only (chunks will stop up the sprayer). It also works on your coconut fiber baskets so the little tree rats don't pull them apart for nesting material. I spray the stuff everywhere!

So true. I have watched them on both the front and back porches... when I go out and sit they hunker down on a limb giving me the stink eye until I go back inside. Hitchcock should have done the squirrels and not the birds! LOL

LOL I know the folks down the road at Avery Island would love to hear about this. Heck, maybe Tabasco should start their own line of pest control products.

I forgot the "strain through a piece of cloth before putting in the spray bottle" step.

A squirrel giving you stink-eye. That is funny, but it certailnly paints a true picture of the little guys. They honesly do not bother my garden at all. Again, Red Squirrels and Fox Squirrels. Now, those lousy little ground hugging chipmunks - there is a pest.

Ohhh, and how about those Canada Geese. They do a good job of clipping the grass but then they lay down those green cigars off over the sidewalk where at least you can see them. But the slippery green bombs in the yard are disgusting to step on.........

a trick I have luck with is pie tins and soap...the movement and sound seems to scare them...poke a hole in the pit tin, and a hole in a bar of soap, hang both by yarn or string where they can clank together, near your plants...no chemicals, no harm...but drives them away

aja, when you mentioned soap my mind immediately jumped to the soap-socks-boot camp scene from Full Metal Jacket. Darn critter never had a chance!

I help with programs at one of our state parks that used to be a privately owned garden. Deer have become quite an issue at that particular location. There are two large rose gardens and many native plant areas that can get demolished pretty quickly when deer are free to browse on the veg. The management ended up stringing electrical fences around all of the rose gardens and a few of the smaller native plant areas. They're sealed up and activated every evening at close until the next morning. This can be quite bothersome, and a drain on manpower, especially when considering this is a publicly funded state park. But the alternative is not an option.

So those squirrels were giving me the stink eye again when I got home today... and yes, the potted dwarf gardenia is missing a bit of dirt... think its time to mix up some pepper juice!

tree rats, they love the new flower spikes, love to chew the tips right off. My only defense is to watch the plant carefully and when the spike reaches near the "perfect squirrel tasty height" I wisk it indoors and my indoor cat raises gives the old middle claw salute. I wish they'd figure out a way to get into the outdoor mice traps and consume some of the poison there!
