Smile Left with old uncared for Orchids.

I live in South Florida and a neighbor moved and gave me all her uncared for orchids. I have no idea what kind they are. They have few leaves and many stems pointing in different directions. I can not tell what is dead or alive. I have repotted all of them. It looks like they have a healthy root system. I am not sure how to proceed. HELP! I have no experience with orchids! I don't want them to die!

Hello ramona8180; First off if they have healthy looking roots that's certainly helpful. Before going further in trying to help you and the orchids I feel at a major disadvantage in giving advice without some pictures. Also may I ask what kind of medium you repotted to? Was it medium size bark, etc. With photos I and others here at the Forum can help you more. AL

Hi Ramona. Welcome to Orchid Talk. I have a friend in my area that moved into a house with several under a tree left by a previous owner. The most common orchids grown here are Vanda, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis and Oncidiums. If you go to the American Orchid Society website you will find basic culture sheets that may help you identify your plants. Or you can look at the articles here on Orchid Talk that will help you decide how is best to care for each one. Vanda are usually in wooden slatted baskets (or black plastic baskets) and have roots hanging loosely with no potting materials. Cattleya can be found in wood baskets or clay pots, rarely in plastic...and have large chunks of wood and charcoal as potting. Plastic pots usually contain Phals, which have fat plump leaves that look fake or Oncidiums with have lovely foilage (sometimes spotted with dark freckles) and very small thin roots that sometimes go everywhere. If you take a few pictures we will be able to help you more. Here in Florida a nice porch with good airmovement is ideal during the summer.
Again welcome to the group. Hope you will find the information you need.

Thank you. I repotted them in a mix I got from boxstore it had bark what looked like coal in it. Most of the plants were pot bound and I was afraid to do much other than put them in the new hanging baskets I had bought. Let me try to find out how to post pictures on this site.
