considering that there are two new canes coming along and that they look as green as they should... it's most likely just natural leaf shedding on the older canes... den.s tend to go bald on last years/older growth... don't panic just yet! as long as the new canes keep coming up without any trouble just maintain your routine...
    good luck

Agree with Shane. And, leave old canes, as long as they are alive (even leafless), as they still provide food to the plant, and some dens even bloom on old canes.

    Good luck!

kathi is spot on! unless the older canes show signs of soft rot, dont touch em! they can provide energy, flowers, and keikis!

first let me thank you guys for your help, thanks . when I first posted it was late and I was tired so didn't get to ask all I wanted . have since taken the time to adjust the photos and resubmit my other questions . I tried to place arrows to show exactly what I want you to see. I wanted to know if I should be worried by these dark areas at the joints of this den .nb it did not look this way when I bought it and the other pic shows the new growths and right where the arrow is the leaf fell off that
new growth . was wondering if that is normal ? it just turned yellow and fell off .

Your potting mix looks a little on the dry side. You want to make sure it's getting enough water while it is growing.

thanks Gage . do you think that's the reason for the browning joints and the new growth leaf falling off ?
