I suspect it is sunburn or chemical burns and not a bacterial or fungal infection. You should check for sun exposure from the side especially after 3 pm and also check for wind drift from neighboring areas especially if herbicides or other chemicals have recently been sprayed. I had the same problem when my neighbour sprayed Paraquat in his compound.

This looks like sunburn to me. That is my opinion. The sun changes. What you thought was 50% shade might have changed with the season.
The only other explanation is possibly a contaminated compressed sprayer? or as Yew Sung noted ...chemical drift from a neighbor.

I can show you pictures of the exact same nature when I moved a vanda that was hanging in shade and pulled it more up front. It suffered the same looking damage on one entire side. It is ok...but looks terrible.

Once you have meandered through the process of elimination, hopefully most of which has been pointed out in preceeding posts for convenience, my main suspicion would be as Zain and Cathy posts 12 & 13, 'sun' and 'drift' having similar results. As you have not posted we hope you have managed to overcome the situation forced on you and any infection risk due to tissue damage can b easily fought with systemics and bleach.

Tillandsia Unisoides is great for covering up aesthetically displeasing sights, if only to help the view without compromising air circulation.

Would be interesting for future ref to compare with Cathys photo documented experience.

Thanks everyone for the advise and assistance or even just sympathy! everything helps!
From all the comments, the only possibility it seems is contaminated water! Contaminated with what though will cause this?
It is not soft bacterial rot (which we get in the Phals) - looks quite different and there is no softness in the leaves, it's more 'dried out' than 'watery'
    Regards

Definitely heat or cold damage followed by fungal and bacterial infection.

To me it looks very much like sun damage caused by exposure the hot sun while the orchid was wet. (At least that was my guess before reading the thread.) I suppose it could be many of these. I hope you are able to help these plants. Good luck.

    cheers,
    BD
