Betty, you're right about the greenhouse. That's a totally different environment than outside on a balcony. I wouldn't let water in my leaves if I grew in a greenhouse, either! But for the ones on my balcony, it's no biggie...it's high elevation, lots of wind, lots of heat. Water in the crown is evaporated as quickly as it gets there in most cases.

    Betty and Sand Tiger,

I wasn't challenging either of you and both of you know your orchids more than I! It was a sincere questions. I know that phals grow horizontal and I am religious about removing water from the crown after watering: my orchids grow inside under grow lamps. My question was related to Cattleyas, which I didn't know also grow sideways in nature.

    Thanks for the enlightening answers!

    My best,

    Don "Velamen"

Well, I wouldn't go that far. haha They've still got all summer and nearly all fall (it doesn't get cold here until November usually...but of course you know that! lol) to go. It'll be interesting to see how they take off over the next 5-6 months.
