    Default fungus gnats in leca??

I noticed recently a few fungus gnats hanging around my orchids in s/h. I thought that medium (actually most orchid media) would be too coarse for them to lay eggs? It's that time of year around here so I'm not surprised to see a few, even with my plants being indoors they somehow manage to make it in. So what's the deal? Should I be concerned? Is it because of the s/h and the damp environment? I've read for house plants to cover the top layer with sand and only water from the bottom so they won't lay eggs etc, but that doesn't really work for orchids. Any ideas?

I've never had fungus gnats around my orchids. Maybe increase the air movement around your semi-hydro plants? I am bumping this to move it to the top of the list again. I hope someone can help you.

    cheers,
    BD

Yeah, it might just be too damp. I did increase the output on my humidifier recently too...

I see a lot of those tiny bugs swarming my S/H pots too.
I am not sure if they are gnats at all, but are still annoying when they all crawl out of the S/H pots when I add water.

What I do is take the plant out and do a complete rinse of the pellets. This takes care of the bug problem for at least a few months.

Thanks for the input John I haven't noticed them for a week or so, so I'm guessing they've moved on. Also added a fan to my grow area to help air circulate better in hopes they don't decide to come back.
