Default Phals leaves with strange ornament

    Hi,

yesterday I noticed a strange light brown and hard to touch "ornament" on my Phals leaf and on its crown. It cannot be hot sun because the orchid gets no direct sun.

I have never seen anything like that, maybe someone had this issue before? I would be very thankful for any help..
This Phal is growing a new leaf, so I hope this "ornament" is not a big deal.. plus it's growing in one pot with other three Phals..

    Thank you in advance

I have had it, and it could be a number of things, mechanical damage, pest damage (maybe spider-mites? Although you would also notice a slight silver sheen to the underside of the leaves and very fine silk threads), thrips, or garlic snails.

good luck looking for thrips, unless you have a magnifying glass They are almost invisible to the naked eye. The garlic snails are small with a flat, black or brown shell. Usually about the size of a glass bead. They tend to cover their tracks well too.

Since we're in the same boat here, I'll share with you what I've discovered. Thrips would still be my first guess, edema is now the second. This is copied from the site:
    • Excess water is absorbed by the roots quicker than it is lost by the leaves, causing swelling of plant cells and producing a blister-like lesion.
    • Occurs when plants watered during warm days and the nights turn cool or during periods of cool weather when water quantity and/or frequency is not reduced.
    • The blister-like symptoms can appear on upper or lower leaf surfaces, stems, petals or sepals.

I thought it might be physical /mechanical damage at first. Hope it is not Thrips.

    cheers,
