Default What Happened to This Cattleya orchid?

This plant produced beautiful flowers last year but today when I returned from a three day trip I discovered the black on all three flowers. I grow on a coverd patio area and the rain does not reach this guy. It has been very hot and humid here recently. You will also notice that the spike is growing from the bottom of the plant horizontaly.
The plant is C. walkeriana van. alba 'Pendetive' x C. Ruth Gee
I certainly would appreciate any help and advice.

Hmmmmmm, I think its because of the humidity and heat that caused the damage, but wait for the experts!

Even though it was just for the 3 days, did you have someone checking on them while you were gone?

I think that discoloration is probably caused by a leaf spotting fungus, most likely Botrytis. It Usually happens when the flowers get wet and the fungus spores are already on the plant. But it can also get into partially opened buds when water is applied and the flowers will bloom with spots on them. Leaf spotting fungus is not a danger to the orchid in most cases. The fungus spores are present in most orchid collections. You can treat the orchid with a fungicide if you want to try to control it. Good air movement also helps keep fungus at bay.
