    Default Thrips fix

I am now convinced that I have thirps in at least 2 of my orchids, which pisses me off royally. I have read that Malathion or Actara works, I have both but I'm afraid to use either one because of my two yr old apprentice gardener. Not to mention the stink that the Malathion gives off make me wanna hurl. Are there any alternatives that I can use?

Never use Malathion on Orchids if you have a mixed collection. Malathion will kill your Phals slowly. For thrips use Thiamethoxam (comes under the brand name Axoris in Europe) or even my favourite all purpose systemic Imidachloropid.

The 'go to' treatment for thrips, here in South Florida, is Orthene. But it's a nasty chemical and I would hesitate to have it in the house if I had young children. I don't know any really safe treatments. I use Safer's soap quite a bit, but mostly to treat scale. I don't know how well it will work for thrips.

Thanks to Tucker, I am now using the stinky, but effective Orthene. It has been 2 weeks, and so far not one sign of any new thrips damage to any of my orchids. Thats pretty impressive since my orchid tree and the surrounding shrubs and trees are CRAWLING with thrips, and they are generally relentless on my collection. Dr. Martin Motes told us in a lecture, "Thrips are like original sin. They're always with you." So continual maintenance is the key.

Thanks for the advice, will have to see if the Orthene is available here.
