Default Anything I can use to safely repel insects?

I went out to check my plants today, and lo and behold something at half of my brand new Vanda leaf. I have no doubt the culprit is grasshoppers, as they've been everywhere the past couple of weeks. I want to avoid this happening, so does anyone know of any sprays that are safe for my orchids that will repel insects from getting on them and eating them?

My poor Vanda. It was doing so well, too.

You could put screen around the lot of your orchids. Grasshopper season is in full swing, and it is so hot and dry, there isn't much for them to eat in our area now.

    cheers,
    BD

Something containing neem oil would probably do the job. As with any substance, use it on just a couple plants first just to be sure it does not affect the plant adversely and do not apply during the middle of the day when the plant is exposed to direct sunlight or when the beneficial insects are highly active.

Here's a thought, if chemicals aren't an option: get mesh netting and build a mini tent to go over them. Using a knit with small enough holes to keep them out but let the sun and wind in. I don't mean shade cloth, although that might be an idea so you can take down the burlap if you were not feeling the look any more.

Ugh. There's really no fix...I went out on my balcony today and they're just covering the bars, the sides, my windows...everywhere. I know my plants need the summering outside, but I'm just not going to risk them being chewed up to nothing. I'm taking them inside. God, I hate that we didn't have a winter this year...it's made the summer bugs absolutely unbearable and unstoppable.

Really sorry this is going on, and it a shame that after you went through getting them acclimated to the sun on your balcony that this happens.

Thank you. I know, I hate it...I took so much time and they were finally loving it. Hopefully this invasion won't last all summer and I'll be able to put them back out in a few weeks, or at least the first couple of months of fall. It's still really bright and warm here during september and most of october.

I have never encountered any grasshoppers in my north London flat but I hope that you manage to get rid of them somehow.
