Orthene from what I understand, is a contact and systemic insecticide so it would be beneficial to spray on foliage and on roots. I second Svetlana's comment., You can possibly try to have a adhesive insect traps that are coated with pheromones to capture the thrips and aphids. Is less expensive and quite easy to setup and is effective against pests that are capable of flying. Second advantage is they give a good indication of type and number of pests in your growing area

OK, guys...let's have some science in this discussion. Here's a link to *the* thrip-fighting people--OHP. Warning: it's an expensive and non-stop fight. Once you have them, you have them. The problem is their life-cycle varies with temperature (they love heat). It could be 3-4 days, or in winter 12-14. The other problem is that the insecticides that kill the adults do not kill the eggs or hatched larvae. You have to use a revolving multi-pronged approach of (1) adult-killing spray (pyrethroid or organophosphate), (2) larvae growth regulators that interrupt the life-cycle (like Avid, which is a glycoside), and lastly (3) something to kill the eggs in the medium and the stems (systemic, like Imidacloprid). No one insecticide works. Conserve (produced by Southern Ag) works pretty well, but some Florida counties have regulated its use because the thrips develop resistance. I just had a long discussion with our orchid society president, who pointed me to the latest info:

Update: The thrips did minimal damage this year, after careful and timed use of Conserve!!! YAY! I got the big catts through their bloom cycle without much loss, and the phals are in pretty good trim too. Bonus use: the gardenias (Miami Supreme) before they bloom next month.
