    Default Thrips!

The damn things. A couple of spikes and they have decimated all but two blooms. Below is one of them. I diligently spray but this plant was at the back of the shadehouse. I've decided the shadehouse is going and I'm putting up a screened room with clear polycarbonate roof. I will have much more control over what gets in.

I hate thrips! This was one of my worst years for those nasty critters. I've been spraying Orthene every three weeks. I hate the smell of Orthene but it's the only thing I know of that works. I have heard some interesting things about IGR's (insect growth regulators) but they're very expensive and I'm not even sure they work on thrips.

If your growing area is enclosed and is not part of your living space, biological control with a predatory mite is an option for treatment of mites.

thats a shame that will be a gorgeous bloom, I like anything with Mevr. L. Velthuis as part of it. I've been going lowtech with Bayer 3 in 1, so far I've seen dens bloom that have always been eaten alive, I feel your pain

I think I may now have some thrips attacking my vanda roots. When you use the Orthene, do you spray the entire plant or just the affected area?

usually thrips locate on leaves and buds/flowers... But if you see it on roots, spray whole plant. But before, are you sure its thrips?!
