Default black areas on cattleya orchid leaves

Could someone please tell me what these black spotty markings on my catt leaf are? Actually, 3 leaves are affected and look basically the same. The dark areas seem to be "within" the leaves, no raised or sunken spots at all. When I was checking my orchids today to decide which are ready for a repot, I found the problem then. I have had this orchid for a few years and have never noticed this before now.

    I would appreciate your help...

Is that some type of fungal infection? From the title I expected to see sunburn, but this is something else.

I guess there were no bugs present?

    cheers,

Yipes!! Has this Catt. bloomed before? Do you know the id? If you've repotted it in the past and not noticed those black markings, I would say that it appears to have contracted a fungus, but I have no idea what kind. If, on the other hand, you've had it for years, repotted it, bloomed it, and the spots haven't spread to any other orchids, perhaps it is merely a benign discoloration?

I have no idea, Bruce...wish I did. Does it look fungal to you? No, there were no bugs present.

    Hi Maura,
No, it has never bloomed in the 4 yrs. I've had it. Neither do I know the ID. I remember that I bought it as a "bag baby" at a big box store. I repotted it most likely the day that I bought it (just something I always do) and have repotted it one time since then. I found the problem leaves when I picked it up from the bench in my greenhouse while I was trying to determine which of the gang is due for a repot. I've had orchids with fungal issues before but never one that looked like this, so I'm clueless, too. I didn't even find anything similar while I was going through my "disease articles" that I have saved.

The first thing that popped in my head when I saw it was "eek...hope it's not a virus!"

Thanks for your reply and help...
    Vicki

Yes, it does look like a fungal issue to me. Keep it under fans and treat with a fungicide. (Even if it isn't a fungal issue, the treatment and air movement will not hurt the orchid.)

    cheers,
    BD
