    I would bet it is a mouse or mice. They are horrible about eating the roots of plants.

    I have that problem with roaches, and it seems for every one you see there are 100 you don't. I got some slug/insect bait this spring and used it as a top dressing (lightly), and it dos seem to have helped a little.
