Lightbulb Why no copper fungicide for Dends?

    Hi,

Came across many references in web in recommending against using copper based fungicide specifically for Dends. Have any of you know why the case specifically with Dends?.

I have a few grape plants at home and usually spray them bordeaux mixture and was curios to know if i should spray my orchid collection also with this mixture and stumbled upon a few threads in google against using it but was not able to find why

    any pointers would be helpful

    Sriram

I've been using a copper fungicide on my orchids for years and find it extremely effective. I normally use it as a prophylactic spray once a fortnight during the rainy season. For open wounds/cuts/spots/patches I apply a paste of this on the affected parts.

Copper products are great in more than one way - molluscs, e.gb. Slugs and snails won't go near them, but copper is poisonous to pant life, if too concentrated. ( in a part of UK, the waste heaps from old worked out copper mines, containing maybe 1 part in a thousand of some copper ore, are still so toxic after several hundred years that no green plant grows on them). I only wish I could get Brdeaux, or the old Murphys copper based fungicide, but they are illegal in EU, ( because it might kill you if you drink it, presumably).

I've lost the original box, containing the half kilo of the fungicide and transferred it to a a 200gm Nescafe container and just labelled it 'Copper Fungicide'. It is a light greenish powder and dissolves in water. All I can remember is that it is produced by one of the big chemical companies Monsanto, Bayer, ICI, but I can't be sure. It sticks quite well to the leaves of the orchids. You can see marks made by them on the leaves of the orchids in many of my posts.

Copper sulfate is the ingredient in both Phyton 27 and bordeaux mix formulas.
