    Post black spot and hole

hello...I am a novice and I have a phal. About a week ago one of the leaves developed hard black spot and then a few days after a big hole surrounded the black spot. I think it may be sun damage but not sure. Can someone please help. I will attach a picture as well

As long as its not sitting with water on it or wet soggy roots, I'd just cut off the damaged portion and keep an eye on it. It is likely, as you think, to be sun damage. A black spot can be rot too though, so do cut the whole leaf off and sterilize your cutting tool after doing it. Make sure it stays dry on the leaves and that it has medium light, not full sun. Phals will certainly sunburn.

Hi jrodshine,.. i've never experienced that very big hole on leaves before, maybe because i usually i put in lower sun than recommended than move to slight brighter2 till it seems right for it. So want to ask, just wondering,.. did that hole just happen in one day? Do you see your orchids on daily basis? Did you put it under direct sun or was there a shade?

Yes the whole happened in one day. My orchid is usually under shade but I had forgotten my orchid outside and it was exposed to direct sunlight for a couple of hours. Should my orchid be under direct shade? Can it have a little light on it...like if it is under a tree?

Phals would like shade - mine have done well in the eastern window that gets morning light for a couple of hours and indirect light the rest of the day. The right amount of light will give you lighter green leaves, too much burns them, too little and they get darker and darker green. Make any changes (except to get it out of direct sun!) slowly from darker to lighter until you find its happy place.

jrodshine,.. direct sun is generally not good idea, i'm very careful about the sun thing cause it happened once i read this dendrobium needed just 30 percent shade, then i did put it in something like that but leaves turned yellowish in about 2 days, also i don't really understand that footcandle light measurement. so now i develop a habit to put in a little less light than recommended first and move to brighter light later if leaves is darker than that good green.

Weevils, when you wonder why there is suddenly a hole in one of your best grown leaves, or chunks missing out of its margin, then most likely you have weevils, arm yourself with a bottle of something suitable from the garden centre and follow the instructions.
Its no use spraying the once, you must have strict regime of spraying every 5 days or so over a period of three weeks to eradicate most pests and their eggs as they hatch.
