    Default Cymbidium Disease?

A relative gave me a Cymbidium that has black spots on the pseudobulbs and leaves. I have never owned a Cymbidium before and I am concerned that it has a disease. Anyone know if this is a problem? Thanks.

Looks more like an oncidium alliance. some of the oncidium do have this natural spotting and is not usually a concern.

As long as it doesnt appear to spread I would call it cosmetic damage. It can sometimes be caused by a disease that is not distructive. For example, in kangaroo ferns it is called ink spot disease. It is merely cosmetic and doesnt spread from plant to plant or kill the one it affects. Not sure if it has a name in orchids, but it is proned to Onc. Alliance, Zygo., and some Cattleya varieties. The only downside is it doesn't go away (that I know of) and usually affects new growths just the same. But if your like me and prefer beautiful blooms vs. beautiful foliage then the good news....I've not known a case where it affects the blooming.

I would agree. It's not a Cymbidium. Looks like an Oncidium alliance plant.
