If there are ants, your or orchids could have other sap producing pest. Check closely if there are any (thrips, whiteflys). If there are you cam use some pesticide solution (available in garden section of big box stores).

Monica - I highly recommend that you find a product named "Amdro Ant Block". It is a toxin that they take back to the colony, killing them. I set up homemade "bait stations" in my greenhouse, and the ants seem to have vanished.

I have read that mixing boric acid and cornmeal in a paste from and leaving it near the infestation site could kill the colony.

I was of the opinion the ants were normal for orchids feeding off sweet substances exuded by the orchids. Mine have them in summer and I leave them alone to do their thing. I have had no evidence of sap sucking insects on my orchids that exude honeydew and with no ill affects of ants climbing over them. I would say leave them be unless a cause is detected. the less stuff you inflict on your plants the better
