Default Blue Vanda Rothchildiana in BIG trouble... Help!

    Hi there,
I am looking for advice regarding a neglected blue Vanda I bought 12 years ago.

The plant lived in CA and MA and came back to CA in 2012 (San Francisco bay). I neglected her for the past 8 months... Little watering, left outside this "winter". Leaves start falling (with yellow/ black spots) and I was about to sadly proceed to throw her away when I saw a glimpse of hope! A tiny green root trying to emerge! She is on life support now (fertilizer and regular watering) and wonder if I turn her around and survive? What recommendations would you have (Besides moving to a tropical/climate friendly environment). Thanks much, Olivier

Welcome to the forum! Most of the roots look okay more frequent watering should bring them right along. Now I'll hand it over to the Vanda folks.

    I would suggest the following

    1) Leaves look like having a fungal infection. treat the same with a fungicide (clearlys 3366)
    2) Remove the old leaves sheath in the older leaf growths and expose the stems
    3) Trim and cut the old dried roots.
    4) Soak the roots in a kelp extract (Kelp max is great)

keep it in a humid area and spray water 2-3 times a day. I am sure it would recover.

I would add to the great suggestions above to watch how much light it gets. Fro my experience slowly acclimating to some direct light ian am and pm and avoiding direct sunlight during the hottest time of the day.

If you are lucky it will put out new growth at the side or at the base near the roots. It is a lovely hybrid. Good luck saving it.

Thank you all for the kind words and advices! I will get on it today and try to turn this situation around. Another quick question, would Daconil work for the fungi treatment? Asking since already have some and trying to minimize cost. Thanks much, Olivier

Daconil can be used. I have not personally used it but from what I read it does work on fungal infections that affect orchids

Am I in the right page to add this? I hope so. Some years ago I bought this Vanda, it has the ORIGINAL label on it probably dating back to the early 60's and I can barely read it...it comes from the collection of Sir Stephen Courtauld and is a pale lilac - I can make out the names Sanderiana (?) x Omaha (?) and remember that there's also the name Rothschildia (?)....time will tell.......the original plant was very straggly and 'gangly' so I took the bull by the horns and lopped it off above the roots.....re-basket-ted the main plant (looking good with new leaf growth) and this is what I see appearing now.....exciting! I guess I will have to wait for the flowers to be able to positively ID it - with your help of course!!!!!! Regards from a coldand overcast Zimbabwe!

I would remove those sheaths and expose the stem and jet spray water every day to help them root better. Once they establish, I would give them more light
