Post Enc. x Epi. brown spots on underside of leaves

Hi all, I recently got an Enc. cordigera x Epi. randii which I am super excited about as it has awesome round pseudobulbs that look good even out of bloom.

But there is some spotting on the underside of some of it's larger leaves which makes me concerned. I trusted the growers I got the plant from (they told me not to worry as it was happening on all of the plants they had), but now that the spotting is starting to show up on the top of one of the leaves, I am concerned.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Looks to me as if you have Phyllosticta Leaf Spots and it is too much to discuss on this thread but you can get a lot of information about this at Phyllosticta Leaf Spot just follow what they suggest.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada! Sorry we missed your post yesterday morning. Not sure what happened.

To be honest, the grower should never have shipped that plant or even offered it for sale. I don't think you would have bought it if you'd seen it before buying. I believe Jack is right with the diagnosis so now there is a plant with a very contagious problem among your collection. Very irresponsible of the seller.

Those are pretty scary looking spots. Thanks Jack for the link - I think you are right about the cause. I haven't seen that before - I hope I never do.

Thanks for all of your responses and the link! I've already isolated the plant so hopefully this won't spread!

How disappointing to get something like that from someone you trust. I hope you isolated it soon enough to save you further problems.

If the plant can't be saved or you decide it isn't worth the effort and risk, it shouldn't be too hard to replace it. I don't know why someone would label it as an Encyclia x Epi. cross, but Epi. randii is just an older synonym for Encyclia randii, and the cross with E. cordigera is called E. Rioclarense. The hybrid is somewhat commonly available, but either species or several related species and hybrids would all give the round pseudobulbs you like if well grown.
