Default Phals potted in bark doing poorly

Was wondering why some Phals don't seem to do well in the same bark that my others thrive in. All start out healthy or appear to be. Bark I'm using is your common store brand treated with fertilizer. I am also fertilizing in addition to what the bark has been treated with (weakly-monthly). Perhaps this is breaking down the medium too quickly causing the roots to get soft and turn brown? One Phal I put in water culture and it's doing better with new leaves and roots growing. The other is now in clay pellets (semi-hydroponics) and showing signs of immediate improvement. Do some Phals just don't like bark? Anyone else experience this?

In what kind of media those phals were growing before? If you change media drastically (from water retaining like moss to lessime bark. Root might do that like it and deteriorate. You you need to give plant time to grow new roots I to new media and they will do for e in bark. What brand of bark was it? I found that miracle grow bark is worse bark available.

I would never use any bark that is fertilized. It should be the most stable bark available (lasting for years) without any additions of anything that affects the growth in any way. That will allow the orchid to grow without any major breakdown of the medium over the years before you repot. Fertilizer is what you, and only you, add when you think the orchid needs it. Some orchids need much less, some more. The plant in clay pellets is fine probably because clay is inert and doesn't give off unnecessary nutrients and breakdown products.
