I've always said that learning to grow orchids is as much about learning what doesn't like your conditions and avoiding those plants.
Stick with those that are happy in your environment, and branch out cautiously.
If you've got such rot problems Kirstie, move to a drier mix, up the air circulation, and don't smother your babies with quite so much water.
