In Japan, many sons are named for their number of appearance. Not quite "one of nine" like borgs; but Shiro and Hashiro are both proper names that refer to what number the son was (ie, first son, second son, etc.) Help me here, Diane, it's 20+ years since I've spoken Japanese.

It's not unusual at all for much of our cult sci fi and fantasy to borrow, derive and steal ideas and plot threads from foreign cultures, history and myth foundations.
