well... see... I would probably hang on to it... but that's just me and it's because I can't bear to throw things out... you will find pots with only orchid mix under the benches where plants use to be... of course, I still am hoping that they would sprout from something or somewhere...
Anyways... on to this plant... I think that if you can keep it warm and humid then you have some ways of coaxing the plant to stay alive... from looking at it, it is mighty dehydrated so it is obviously not getting enough water... probably bad roots... so you have to now be really on the ball with your watering... moist mix!!! Not Dry, not WET! Also, airflow... if you can get a fan going then it's always better for the roots...
well, others have also given more advise, eg rooting hormone, so good luck with the little sucker!

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and the advice. I'm glad there are some who understand my refusal to give up and my stubborn sentimentality. Still, Julie (and everyone else saying, 'Throw the plant away already!'), I don't think you're being callous, just realistic, and you know that the longer I hold on the harder it will be in the end.
While it would be easier to just buy another 'Golden Elf', I'm not ready to give up quite yet. I'll put these tips into practice (I'm getting out of the city today, so I should be able to find some willow bark!) and give the plant a little more time. If it still doesn't get any better, then I'll finally admit defeat and buy another one.
At least I'll be a little wiser in my orchid shopping now; I'll definately be choosier about where I get them. It's not a bargain if it ends up dead!
