    You're right about judging the dryness of CHC and bark mixes. I try and remember how many days it's been and what the current humidity is.

    That's why I grow everything except my Catts in sphagnum. In clay it dries out quickly, but I always can tell from feeling the top, exactly how dry it is. More watering, but many less watering mistakes.

    It's all a matter of experience. Some people may be aghast, but I just stick my finger into the mix to test the dampness. Down to the top of the second knuckle. That is the way I was taught. Works okay for me. I grow indoors and almost everything is in some sort of bark or bark mix. Only paphs and phrags get water more than once a week... and then not always..
