    Default Sick Catts

I bought three lovely species Catts from a reputable grower in early September. I repotted them upon arrival, and all three were healthy. After about 3 weeks, one of them got very sick. The p-bulbs shriveled and turned brown, and the brown spread upward from the base of the leaf. It happened rather quickly, and I cried a bit as the plant went into the trash.

It's happening again to the second of the three plants. I've never had any problem like this with my Catts, and the two plants weren't even near each other.

Is this crown rot? I didn't think Catts were susceptible to that. Is this something I should mention to the grower, or is it my culture? I've never had any trouble with Catts before.

Thus far, the third plant looks fine.

Bacterial rot? Hmm...was watering standing in the leaf axils? I know that you know better, but maybe the grower watered during a very cold spell?

How long does rot take to make itself evident after infecting a plant? I don't think we've discussed this on the forum, yet..

I'm so sorry, Julie. There is nothing more disappointing than watching a new plant dwindle away when there's not really anything you can do about it...except a Physan drench and maybe less humidity for a while? Maybe a small fan blowing on the plant, too.

I would definitely talk to the grower. Sounds like whatever it is came with the new plants. Very sad to see plants die on you like that...

I did contact the owner. He's been nothing but gracious in all my previous dealings. I simply asked what the cause was, and I sent him the same photo.

    Here was his response:

Sorry for what happened to your plants. This is a fungus, and we don't have much of this here. However, these are fairly recent imports and what can happen is that the plants suffer an extra stress because of coming from Brazil, starting to adapt here and then shipped again to a different set of growing conditions. This kind of fungus, however, must have been in the plants and showed up under the conditions I mentioned. I will take a good look at my plants from these two items, but in the meantime I will of course replace them at no charge. What I will do is try to send plants that are already establishing in the pots (already potted), they will go next week. As for these two plants, throw them away asap (I would do the same with the pots, certainly the medium), cause fungal spores can spread by splashes of water and I don't want you to have any chance (albeit remote) of more contaminated plants.

So, I am sorry for your frustation, but these things can happen. The next ones should be OK, I will look at them very carefully before shipping. And please keep an eye on the chocoensis, I will do the same here, and please report imediately if there is any problem.

I thought it might be useful to others to know this was a fungus. I'm going to spray the third plant I bought from him with Physan as a preventative measure.

Great vendor, Julie..You'll have to private message me who they are... (I'll probably buy from them in the future. Truly honest vendors are hard to come by.)

At least you had a good ending to a bad story. Good luck with the last one and the new arrivals.
