Default Potinara Hoku Gem Growing Issues

    Hello,

I was recently given a Potinara Hoku Gem as a gift. But, oh dear, it have never grown an orchid before. I have been watering it every three days, since it is quite humid here at the moment. I got some orchid fertiliser, and put it in after watering the plant so I didn't burn the roots. I have placed it in indirect sunlight, on the banister on the edge of our verandah, so it is quite light (by the way, I live in the north of Australia and it is really hot and sunny 99% of the year).

and everything was going fine for three weeks, but now the flowers are dying (normal I suppose, this happens with plants) but the leaves have started getting these black spots on them, though it is only happening to the smallest shoots, not the bigger ones. Though there are also these little dead patches developing on the ends of the shoots as well. It looks similar to when leaves would die on a normal plant, though it is happening to a lot of the shoots, and I noticed one today on the side of one of the shoots as well.

What I have thought is that it might be a bit cramped up because I can see the emerging on the top of the rocks and they're starting to poke out of the bottom.

Now that you have heard the full chronology of the plants life, can someone make some suggestions before I damage the poor thing irreversably?

    Thanks!

You may be watering it too much. And with such high humidity it may be getting a fungus. I would get some fungicide - I think in Australia it may be called Shield, although one of our Aussie members will know better. Cut back the watering a little.

Is the plant in a pot or mounted?

Welcome to the forum. I'm not a catt expert, so I'll leave the diagnosis to the experts, but if you can, a photo of the plant might help them.

It is potted. I will put some fungicide on it, but tonight I will take a picture and post it. Then you can see what it actually looks like.

    My poor plant!

    Thanks for your help.

Definitely a picture would be helpful.

You left a word out so I will ask -- "What is starting to poke out if the bottom?" If roots are emerging from the bottom, then that is normal and would seem to indicate that it is growing happily.....

Looking forward to the photo! I am guessing fungus also.

    Default Here are the pictures

Ok, so I've attached the pictures. I don't have the best camera, it's a bit out of focusm but you get the picture.

One shows the black spot, whereas the other shows those brown-grey patches I was talking about.

I think I'll decrease the watering further to every 4 days while it is humid, see what happens.

    Plus the fungicide.

And it is the roots that are growing out of the bottom.
