Bug on flower spike

This is a discussion on Bug on flower spike within the Orchid Ailments / The Compost Pile forums, part of the Orchid Culture category; I was just wondering if anyone knew what these were... They are on the spike ...

    Default Bug on flower spike

    I was just wondering if anyone knew what these were...

    They are on the spike to one of my doritis pulcherrma....poor little plant.

    Awwwg! brown scale for sure . eggs or babies are under the scale it is an adult babies have a yellow cast to them they also get on the under side of the leaves , be sure to spray in every nook and cranny a couple of times at 3 day intervals , then check often .. Gin

    Yep -- classic scale. YOu can take off the individual scales with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, but given the number you will definitely need to spray the whole plant. Good luck!

    I'll be spraying them like crazy for sure. Now scale and mites....it's a busy week for bugs around here apparently.

    If you are not already doing so, I would suggest that before spraying neem oil or any contact pesticide on the plants, spray them first with horticultural soap in order to break down the wax armor first.

    This will allow the contact pesticide to penetrate the insects better and kill them. If you are using systemic insecticide then it would not matter since it goes into the insects via their feeding apparatus and bypasses their armor.
