Default Is Something Sucking My Phal's

The attached pics are of an otherwise healthy Phal. But I fear something is sucking or biting the leaf and a secondary infection is setting in. I know trying to I.D. orchid illnesses is probably as difficult a task, if not more difficult, than trying to name a NOID....but if anyone out there has some ideas, I'd be VERY Thankful.

Those do look like thrip bites. You may want to treat the plant.

There are quite a few pesticides for thrips...some sort of systemic might work well. Or you could by those predatory bugs that eat them...(not sure what they are though).

The insecticides I have found include: Malathion, Orthene (Acephate) or Spinosad. For indoor porblems I've seen insecticidal soaps recommended. The predatory mite is Amblyseius cucumeris...haven't a clue where you'd purchase mites! I've also found Bayer Advanced 3-in-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Control is a good general "kills lots of stuff" pesticide.

Does powerful mean dangerous? Is it safe for people to use?

Yes, it is a poison. Be sure to use it outside or in a well vented area. Wash it off of you skin as soon as possible. I have been using it for years, but I always try to be careful.

    Cheers,
    BD
