Smile RHS Orchid Show 2008

A very long but hugely enjoyable day in London last Saturday. As expected the want list was massive and the bank balance tiny.I took loads more photos and will get round to uploading them shortly. Enjoy.

Hey, at least someone took pictures, thanks! They are really good too. I was there on Fridy evening but hardly took any photos plus the light was pretty poor so they were coming out quite dark and I couldn't be bothered faffing with the camera settings.

I must admit I didn't take any photos this time. I was also a little disappointed by the amount of vendors and exhibitors there, I'm sure last year there were a lot more. However, that didn't stop me from buying loads so I shouldn't be complaining.

I think I would love to see people specialising more in the different types of orchids, so that you didn't end up with a large amount of people selling a mix of everything, with very little actual variety. Sort of like there being more people that showed a greater amount of paphs, or vandas or oncs.

And it's a shame that I didn't realise it was on until the last minute, otherwise I could have arranged to say hello to anyone who was there at the weekend. Who knows, I could've walked right by you Steve on Saturday. (If you saw a really annoying blonde woman in a bright red coat it was probably me) Although elena was there Friday night so would not have been able to see her as I was drinking red wine in a pub in West Brompton - very important stuff I get up to!

Thanks for the pictures, there are always things that you miss on the day, and it's nice to be reminded of the other good things you saw.

Kerry, I agree with everything you said. I was a little underwhelmed but I wasn't sure if it was because the show wasn't as good this year or if, a year into growing orchids, I just wasn't as excited about the plentiful but more run-of-the-mill plants.

I went with a long wish list but only managed to find two plants, the lack of Phragmipediums was particularly disappointing for me. I too wish there more specialised vendors selling a wider variety of different genera/species.

Drinking red wine sounds good to me

It was my first RHS Show and as such, I was very impressed. I've only ever been to the North of England Orchid Society shows at Tatton Park before. They are much more modest affairs. If I'd have thought on I would have photographed the name plates of all the blooms ..DOH!

Excellent photos Steve! There's quite a few really nice ones there...

IMG_0140 = Cymbidium Valley Vampire 'Blood'
IMG_0159 = Epidendrum pseudoepidendrum
IMG_0156 = Cypripedium japonicum
IMG_0185 = looks like Paphiopedilum Armeni White, but the spotting on the pouch makes me think that it has some emersonii in it... maybe a cross between the two otherwise could be straight Joyce Hasegawa
