@Maura:First of all thanks and glad to hear that Phillip is much better. Not sure about the name but while taking the pictures I tried to include the name of the plant and I think Freedom Flyer is the name. This is really a fantastic paph clean, clear colour and fabulous substance and form. The only fault (if you can call it that) is the rather short flower stem. I had a lot of problems with the White Balance while photographing with the fluorescent lighting in the Exhibition Hall. At the beginning of the post I mentioned that the light level was so low that I had to shoot at ISO 800 - a speed that that doesn't lend itself to good colour rendering and overall quality. However it's a testimony to Nikon that the D200 handled it quite well. I'll post a few more pictures taken in the Flower Dome, a humongous steel and glass structure that housed some more of the exhibits - the non competition section. Picture taking was much more pleasant with the natural lighting and I could shoot at ISO 100.

    Paphiopedilum (rothschildianum X Vinther's Treasure)

I would like to share this particular Paphiopedilum that is sold over the booth ---vendor information removed - see faqs on posting---- in WOC. Stunning bloom.

    Cheers

My thoughts, down to the last one, Yew. I was thinking the white balance would have been difficult with that white Paph - did you end up having to set it on fluorescent? I almost never use that setting, because it usually blues things so much - but then, fluorescent lighting has become far more like daylight these days. Phillip has taught me to use the lowest ISO possible, and I understand the difference. My D80 won't goes to 100 as well, so I pretty much leave it there, even I'm not photographing for magazines or billboard advertising.... As you know, I always prefer natural lighting, and I'll do just about anything to avoid having to use the on-camera flash. I know you didn't have your tripod, but I'd rather take a no-flash photo at a 2 second shutter speed than a flash photo at 1/125th. I'm still messing around with the aperture settings - working on more accurate depth-of-field, and improving the quality of the bokeh. I keep my setting on manual, so I'm forced to make different decisions on my own - turns out a lot of bad photos, but if I take enough shots, I eventually get one I like. Thank goodness orchids will stay still to have their photo taken - they are as patient with us as we have to be with them.

Thank you for all the shots of the paphs - I'm loving every single one!

@Maura: Yes most of the shots were taken with flash and that takes care of colour balance. I normally set Auto WB but some of the shots taken without flash had to be tweaked a bit in iPhoto on my Mac - I wish I had learnt Photoshop as that would really give me more latitude in correcting the colour. It took bit o doing to get rid of the green cast .

@ Vincent: Didn't do the rounds of the vendors' stands properly and missed that black paph! Do you know if the leuchochilums and that black one belong to Joseph Yeo?

Next time, you need a VIP pass to get in there with all your equipment! Now THAT would be a spectacular display.... As for iPhoto - I use it as well, but I hate using it to correct color - I can really get myself tied up in knots and then have to "Revert to Original". I have Aperture 3 on my Mac, but it's so complicated, I can't do anything right with it - have to take a seminar on that. From what I hear, it's better than Photoshop, at least in some ways.

Default Phalaenopsis galore at the 20 WOC

I know I have posted too many pictures of the 20WOC and is becoming boring, but I simply have to post these phalaenopsis pictures from the Flower Dome. These were all part of the landscaped exhibition and must have made up at least 70% of the orchids on display.

I promise these are absolutely my last pictures of the 20 WOC.

Default More phalaenopsis at the Flower Dome

In the previous post most of the phals were mini phals and very colourful indeed. In this post there is a picture of the big whites with my 9 year old grand daughter standing next to them for comparison. The large pink is the same size as the white. I liket that garden bench made from drift wood. .
