Amey, there is an Orchid Society of India run out of the Dept of Botany, Punjab University. I've seen couple of emails that Dr S.N. Hegde forwards to the TOSKAR group (The Orchid Society of Karnataka) from them. The OSI even hosts an annual conference as well. Even our local society did not have much interaction before couple of years, as most of the folks are slightly elder and no email communication. Recently they started some sort of show where the members get their plants, but again has been difficult as lot of folks do not want to get their orchids, especially that they might get damaged.

I think the OSI members are mostly academicians and they need to think outside their current group. OSI might need to do an online group with a web-site and encourage more such meetings (but difficult in some of the big cities, esp with the traffic). To a certain extent social networking with sites like FB and G+ has helped create awareness and private groups do exchange info (as you also have seen). But yes, still quite a distance to do something like AOS kind of shows and awards. I think you should reach out to OSI, become a member (especially with your academic back ground as well) and propose some of the ideas.

I know about this society Satish, but as I said earlier, it is not meant for orchid showing and judging, they are mostly academicians working on tissue culture of certain species for conservation etc. I met a few of them at Singapore during the WOC.We do not have a orchid society for the hobbyists where we can get them judged. Even if we start one who will judge the orchids and on what basis, we will need to lay a foundation for something similar to the AOS.
