    Default Electronic Orchid Judging

So what do you guys think?? I know since we are not a registered orchid society or anything and one cannot have their orchids judged here, I just needed a place where I could vent my feelings. I have a very unique problem, I am one of the handful orchid growers from a country with a population of 1.2 Billion (17% of the world population ) And in spite of the origin of hundreds of orchid varieties from Northeast and South India, the orchid scene in India is rather in the initial phases of development. There is not much awareness and only a few nurseries providing orchids, so due to the general unavailability and costs, Orchids are rather rare in cultivation. So we do not have a functioning orchid society, there is one titular society somewhere in Northeast India but they are more involved in local orchid conservation and providing impetus for local orchid farmers from a horticultural perspective, both noble causes, but of hardly any help to me. I grow many orchids, which I believe are worthy of being judged and getting awards, I am a member of both AOS and the RHS, but simply due to the geography I cannot have my orchids judged and awarded. During the WOC in Singapore, I had a brief chat with Mr. Peter Furniss of the AOS who suggested that I can have my plants shipped to the US for the judging or just the inflorescence spike. Apart from the impracticality of shipping the plant or the spike a few thousand miles, the costs the documents involved, No one can still guarantee that the spike will reach the destination in the same condition at the correct time when the judgings happen at a particular centre. This is very very frustrating. In this modern age of digital photography, broadband internet, why can't we have some form of electronic judging via skype etc? They could draw standards as to how one could photograph the flowers with scales etc and send the digital copies, plus their could be a video of the plant etc via skype etc. I really think some orchid society should think about this.

I feel much better now that I have vented my feelings. By the way all this comes on the back of my mule ear oncidium producing a spectacular 75 flowers and buds on just 2 spikes, something not recorded in orchid history I think.

You, of all people, should be able to scoop up awards, Amey! Unfortunately, digital photography is almost synonymous with edited photography. They used to be able to say "A picture never lies," but that's not the case any more. There would have to be some way to certify that the pictures were untouched.

That being said, I see big things in your future - establishing and heading up the Indian Orchid Society...

I'm sorry to hear you don't have an orchid group. There are a group of ladies in my area that have their own meetings. Maybe if you post a note at a nursery and see if there are any others interested in getting a group together. The "friends of orchids" group here limits their size to 12. Each plays host once a year, so the cost of playing host is kept to a minimum. Perhaps if you start small, eventually it will turn into an AOS group. In the meantime, I'll keep admiring your orchids from afar. You definitely grow some award winners...I'd love to see a full shot of your mules' ear in bloom. That sounds like one amazing display!

Unfortunately, Amey, Patty is quite correct. It is simply far too easy (and common) for digital photos to be "adjusted". I do not foresee electronic entries ever being accepted.

Uh. That's terrible that you don't have an official outlet for judging...I see you easily being awarded! You always post stunners.

Yes I know All the orchid people I know are so nice, that I forget that there might be a crafty cheater lot out there who might want to manipulate. That being said, I still think a live video judging via skype to be a viable option, atleast it will be in the Indian Orchid Society I will found LOL. I mean they can make a different category of awards just like they have for orchid photography they can mention that the orchid was judged Electronically an EAOS so to say (Electronic AOS lol)

Connie this actually is a great idea, most practical and a good way to start, and I definitely know there are more than 12 people in Pune who may want to join in. Thanks
