Here are a few more pictures from the show I feel compelled to post. I very much enjoyed it! With my mother and my sister at my side I was forced to buy 10 orchids. I kept on saying "I don't need more orchids, no room in my house", but they chanted "buy the purple one, buy the red one" and "don't get any more of those little ones on-the-stick"!

    Hi Ania,
Great pictures, especially the red Miltoniopsis.
You got 10 orchids, that is not too bad. Well, better haul than Tind-O and Tikva!!! Enjoy your recent acquisitions!

    Hi Tind-O,
See, my guess was quite good. You went in with $200 and prepared to spend that much! But you know, there are other opportunities to get more orchids. And there is always the internet. Over the year, I have bought so many orchids through the mails. Enjoy your plants, I bet they will make you proud!

    Hi Jason,
Sorry to hear that there were not enough great paphs to wet the appetite of a connoiseur like you. I would be very disappointed too. However, I thought that Glen would be there. He got a nursery somewhere in New York. He has lot of great paphs including tons of sand hybrids! The paphs I bought from him have been great!

    Cheers. Hoa.

Glen was at the show--he had some nice phrags in his display but not as impressive as his displays in past years, imho. Always interesting things on his sales table but nothing terribly exotic. I was almost tempted to spring for a BS Jason Fischer but when I realized that I already had 3 seedlings, I couldn't justify more of the same grex.

lots of budded lowii on the sales tables, from multiple vendors, but all of them had flowers open (i.e. screened) and, while nice, not the "knock your socks off" lowii from certain strains.

did walk away with a large L. purpurata fma. carnea. hopefully it will bloom this summer.

    Hi Jason,
That laelia is a good buy. Hmm, I know that Glen has his growing nursery in Hawaii and the greenhouses in NY is just holding plants for sale. Maybe his stock of good stuff is running low! I had to wait for weeks until he got the chance to go to Hawaii to get the best (aka the biggest plants that he has) for me.
Oh well, there is always next year's show!
    Cheers. Hoa.

After reading the post of the broken paph, and after recalling my near disaster, I inspected my purpld Dtps. and found that the last flower was indeed injured! One of the petals is half broken off giving the flower a crooked look. Oh well. I just hope that spike keeps growing.

Wait, is there anything I should do?

Do I get to call you Tindo also? It's more work than I like to do to copy and paste your name when I am talking to you haha!!!
I think what you should do is come back here and find the person who broke it and we both will have a chat about the importance of personal space and ORCHIDS IN BLOOM!!!! ARGH! And then you should come to the hotel and have a chat since I let them off too easy and now I won't get another orchid *sigh*
I'm sorry yours was hurt too, but I guess we both can take the time and let them grow nicely......

My experience at the wimpy New England shows this winter was that they were...well, wimpy! Growers showed up with mass public consumption dreck (very overpriced), even while they posted some fine items on their Websites (that were nowhere to be seen at the shows.)

The one plant I purchased at the NH Orchid Show is really struggling, and it's not through a lack of care on my part. I'm sorry to hear the NY Show is following this trend, albeit on a larger scale. I'm moving towards all purchases through trusted growers on the Web, or visits to trusted greenhouses. That's where I'm finding the kick-butt species and hybrids at reasonable prices.

There - that's my two cents...

What do you think are reasonable prices, I want to know becuase Im still new to buying orchids, and havent really got a frame of reference to compare prices. Thanks.

Tikva, we will both grow even better flowers than the ones we got! Im sure. And yes, you can all call me Tindo, I feel the affection every time someone calls me that,

Reasonable prices are, as in anything, learned through comparative shopping.

I use the box stores and grocery stores as one standard. You can get decent blooming hybrid crosses for about $20 easily now in many places. It is a caveat emptor (buyer beware) as to the quality of the plant. Check that the leaves are extremely healthy and poke a finger in the potting mix to see if it's not completely broken down (that still doesn't guarantee the roots are healthy.) You'll see plants in horrible health along side robust plants. Choose wisely!

There are a handful of vendors I shop with online who are established and reputable. The biggest question with these are, how close is the plant to blooming size? The smaller, the cheaper, generally. But I want instant gratification, so I look for the larger, more specimen-sized ones where I can find them (that's not easy if you don't have a tremendous orchid grower near you.) In the Northeast, we don't have the nurseries you'll find down south or in CA.

Of course for rarer plants, expect to pay more. But if you're in the market for them, you'll quickly learn your own sense of what the going price is, and what a value is.

Remember that different vendors specialize in different things. If you have a broad range of orchid interests, expect to work with a number of good growers. Feel free to PM me if you're interested in any of my sources. Unfortunately, RVO isn't selling anymore. For the genera they sold, their plants were absolutely the best grown I've recieved!

    Tindo;

Try picking one or two plants that you would like to have, and then check 3 places - 1. the giant internet auction - if you find the plant there, assume it is not top of the line, but the big dealers usually have healthy, if smaller, plants. 2. Google the plant and check out all the growers that list it. You may see a wide range of prices, but dig into the details, pot size, leaf spans, awards, etc. 3.Post a specific request about that plant here on the forum, asking folks to PM you with any recommendations they have. You will find some people recommend vendors that others tell you to stay away from!! Most of all, while price is something of an indicator (you get what you pay for....) it is not the ultimate measure. I have some very expensive plants that just won't do diddly for me, and a cheaper version that is a happy camper!!
