RHS London Orchid Show Preview Evening Tonight
I just got in after spending a day in London and going to the RHS London Orchid Show preview evening. I've only been to one, fairly small local orchid show before so this was a new experience to me.
Had some mixed feelings about it - there were some fantastic orchids exhibited, many that I've not seen before but I was slightly disappointed that quite a few vendors were selling a vast amount of phals and NOIDs and I would have prefered to see a little more variety (read Catts ).
I went with a bit of a wish list and was ready to spend some cash but only ended up buying two plants in the end - Paph Rosy Dawn 'Superbum' AGM/RHS and Paph Millers Sunset (Copperware 'Peachglow' x Dusty Miller 'Shelley'). I love though though, very happy Out of all those orchids I left with two Paphs, maybe I am into Paphs after all!
I took some pictures but I was pretty overwhlemed and really pushed for time so didn't take as many as I would have liked. It's almost midnight here and I just got in after a very long day so I'll go through them tomorrow and post whatever's in focus

Sounds like you had a good time! I look forward to the photos.

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

Woohoo Paphs!
Yes I look forward to your pics too.
I wasn't into paphs either untill I started my own collection apart from my mother's phals and catts, but I ended up oddly with soo many slippers....they are very intriguing and diverse plants, and no one can have the same one as yours unless it's a division (they don't mericlone readily). I'm always excited to see the first blooming of a seedling. Slippers have an unique beauty and exotic appeal that is very different from the conventionally elegant beauties of phals and catts, dends, cymbidiums. I would love to own your paph Rosy Dawn 'Superbum' AGM/RHS (I still don't have a white/pink complex, but looking. I think my mom would like it too).

I hope it wasn't a bad trip for you. I am going today with my other half, and we shall see what it's like. It will be my first orchid show, so I imagine that I will enjoy it, especially as I have very little knowledge or experience of the variety that is out there.
I love phals, so I may be on cloud 9, but I am certainly expecting named cultivars and grexes, not loads of NOIDs like you'd find in Tesco or M&S. I have had a look online at some of the british nurseries that will be exhibiting there, and couldn't really tell what they will be bringing along.
The only thing I have found about English exhibitions, even the big flower shows like Chelsea and Hampton Court, is that there will be a smaller proportion of good vendors, and then lots of filler vendors which I have no interest in at all!
I've still got my fingers crossed though!

I just googled your superbum (wow that could really be taken the wrong way! )
Very nice
You did say that you fell in love with a white paph at your local show, so it looks like you are being converted after all. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos too, and I'd love to see what your other purchase looks like, as I could only find references to the parents, bot your actual cross online.

Too funny! Hope you have a nice time today, there were plenty of named Phals, some gorgeous scented varieties too so you'll be spoiled for choice. I was limited in what I could buy because of having to travel home or I would have probably bought some big phals and cymbidiums too.
Anyway here are my Paphs. As you can see the blooms are a little worse for wear in places after 2 cab rides and a 2.5 hours train journey. Funnily enough even the guy who checks the tickets on the train commented on them
Rosy Dawn 'Superbum'
Paph Miller's Sunset
Still working on the rest of the pictures. I seemt to have taken more than I thought I did.
