    Default Native Orchids

Hope I've named these correctly. These native terrestrial orchids were found at Callaway Gardens in GA, and here in Pensacola at Tarkiln Bayou State Park.
Tarkiln was almost turned into a condo community with a dredged marina in the small bayou. Thankfully the state stepped in and bought the surrounding property to add to the existing park. I've found 7 species of carnivorous plants in addition to the rose pogonia and grass pink orchids, and a huge variety of wildflowers, rare plants, and birds live in the park. The twayblade, green adder's mouth, and what I think may be crane fly orchid were photod at Callaway Gardens in April. Please correct if I've misidentified any. Thanks for looking!

    Oops. Too many pics.
Here is Listera Southern Twayblade. Cute little guy about a foot tall; teensy blooms.

Great finds Tami - I'm curious, what was the habitat that the grass pink and rose pegonia were growing in? Lowlands, swamp, meadow? From my understanding they like lowland with water fairly available, but I've never seen them growing wild. Nice shots - Love the pics!

The habitat is wet pine flatwoods. Squishy wet - boots, bug spray, and careful stepping needed! The swampy area drains into the bayou. I had to squat in a bush to find dry enough ground to take the pics LOL! I'm sure there was a snake in there looking up at my bottom saying, "What the.....????" Lots of white pitchers, red pitchers, bladderwort, dewthreads, and sundews. I've seen butterwort there but none this trip. Here are pics of the sundew, yellow butterwort, and dewthread - all carnivorous. The sundew flowers are about 1/4 inch across and close up by 10am. The largest plant I've found there is about 3 inches across. The dewthread are about 10 inches tall and have 1 to 1 and 1/2 inch flowers.

It would have been nice to have you there too. Well, lets go to Fakahatchee this fall and find some wild orchids!
