    Default Masd. Pixie Shadow

Here are a couple of shots of our only Masdevalia. For some strange reason it loves our greenhouse and I am so glad. The bloom here is not so attractive, but it blooms continuously and the plant always wins an award for its foliage. We have NEVER repotted this poor thing. It is very root bound and seems pleased as can be to stay and grow in the same clay pot.

Anyway, I took these two photos this past weekend, just did not get them resized until tonight. Enjoy...

Bruce, this looks like a very happy Masdie. There are actually quite a few that can tolerate warm conditions--I know infracta is one--but because most of the really showy ones require cool conditions, the whole group gets unfairly labelled as intolerant of warmth, and "fussy" and "demanding". I can't grow them very well because I'm so terrible at maintaining even moisture levels with my watering style, but there are many others that you should be able to grow, based on how happy this one looks. Good growing!

    Cheers,
    Rob

Heheh..they all die on us (except this one) lol. We have grown some pretty cool and different orchids, but have never been able to keep another masdie alive (well get it to thrive and bloom anyway - living yes, blooming and growing well - no ). We have 'hot' conditions here in Arkansas. If we ever move somewhere where the temps are cooler (not likely!) I will try some others again - I really would love to grow a Dracula too someday... but I am really pleased with this one and it seems to like living next to the kool cell and staying damp during the really hot summer months here in Arkansas. Thanks for you kind thoughts, Rob!

    Cheers,
    BD

I'll add my losses here as well. Used to be able to grow the Masd's well and flower a few times a year. Slight modifications to the orchid house with light and plant positioning and no more masd. I think there might be one on its last legs.

BD, whats the big leaf Paph behind your Masd' in the second pic ??

I have three that I've been able to keep alive so far, Monarch, a noid and nidifica. I grow indoors though. Keep then right near the fan which also has the humidifier mist pointed at it. I'm very tempted to try exquisita or caudata

Cool monster masd bruce!! I haven't tried these, but I'm thinking my windowsill would be to warm and dry for it, and the catts would be afraid of it LOL...

That is Paph Vanguard, Roy. It appreciates the cooler temps provided by being against the kool cell and the constant spattering of water during the hot summer months.
