    Default Catasetum maculatum

    Hi all

Leave here to share my pictures Catasetum maculatum.

Catasetum maculatum is more common in Nicaragua....
distributed in three countries of Central American: Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panamá.

Common in moist forests to areas dry, Pacific and Atlantic of Nicaragua

Unisexual flowers very meaty, produced in separate escapes; male flowers abundant, in clusters arched. Emanating a strong odor to attract pollinators
It is distinguished by the opening of the labellum oblong-square ... edged fimbriae.

Female flowers relatively rare, 2-3 flowers in a raceme erect,
    the labellum short and round.

After flowering enters sleep and loses all its foliage.

    Flowers male with different shades
    Color

    Female flowers

Flore hermaphrodite with the sexual organ atrophied

That is really cool. Thanks for sharing the information about these. Do you grow your orchids usually mounted? It looks like you have some great specimen sized plants. Good growing, Ana.

    Cheers,
    BD

    Hi Bruce

Yesss, I like big plants...sometimes had to gather some to a single.

Most are mounted.... because on my patio there is a good humidity.
So I get no problems with the control of irrigation.
But I also have many in hanging baskets.

Lately I am dividing and experimenting with potting ..
    doing well at the moment

    Saludos

I like the first picture with the bees flying around the blooms.
Very interesting to learn and see in pictures the different flower sexes.

These are very different from what I see available in northern Illinois. You have opened a new window to the orchid word for me, like Zainal, Nelson and Kfir, to name only a few here on the forum. Thanks.

Thank you for the information and photos showing the different male and female flowers. Very interesting too about the hermaphrodite flowers, which most other orchids are...

I have to say, the background of some of your photos is like a beautiful tropical forest and I wish I could be somewhere like that at the moment.
